Alison Kendall was hired to be the Presidio Planning Coordinator for the City and County of San Francisco for planning for reuse of the Presidio of San Francisco, an Army Base scheduled to close in 1994 and become a National Park. Ms. Kendall participated in the preparation of the General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for the Presidio with the National Park Service planning team. The planning process involved dozens of community workshops, extensive public outreach effort at the local, regional and national level, and numerous public hearings before local boards and commissions. The Presidio General Management Plan won awards from the APA and from California Women in Environmental Design for planning excellence.
As the Presidio Planning Coordinator, Ms. Kendall briefed the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and other officials and coordinated senior staff in City and County departments in studying conversion issues related to Transportation, Infrastructure, Public Safety, Land Use and Recreation. Working with local environmental and community groups, she helped secure over $70 million in federal funds to address problems with Presidio infrastructure and resource protection For her leadership on this important project, Ms. Kendall was nominated for a Public Managerial Excellence Award.
