Project: School District Master Plan
Scale: 18 campuses in district
Date: 2005 - 2006
Client: Dianne Talarico, Superintendent; Winston Braham, CFO
Role: Project Manager, Kendall Planning + Design
The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District hired Kendall Planning + Design to prepare an RFP, select a consultant team, and manage preparation of a Facilities Master Plan. The project involved extensive public outreach. A series of four public workshops were held in 2006, designed to elicit input from a broad array of stakeholders including students, teachers, parents and community members.
Three surveys were targeted at educators, students and community members respectively. A website and series of monthly newsletters kept community members aware of the process. Additional outreach efforts included meetings with parents of minority students, Special Education students, and numerous advisory groups and parent and community organizations to inform them on the process.
Extensive surveys were conducted of the condition of each school site, its programs, capacity and facility needs. A demographic study provided valuable insights on issues affecting future enrollment. Specific facilities improvements to support District initiatives to create smaller learning communities out of the largest school campuses were explored, along with innovative partnerships with Santa Monica College, the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, and other community organizations to meet shared objecti ves through improved programs, facilitie s and transportation. In mid 2006, initial proposals for each campus were generated, which will be refined with further input from District staff, parents, students and community members.
