Project: Streetscape and Open Space Plan for approximately forty blocks; Redevelopment Agency Plan
Scale: 400 Acres
Date: 2005-06 Consultant; Transbay Streetscape and Open Space Plan completed 2006
Role: Project Manager, Associate Principal
Alison Kendall served as Project Manager for a multidisciplinary consultant team preparing the Transbay Streetscape and Open Space Plan for the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. The Plan included conceptual plans for improvements to major streets in a thirty block area surrounding the Transbay Transit Terminal. The project area extended from Mission Street to Folsom Street and from Main Street to Second Street.
A major challenge was the conversion of several extremely wide one way streets into more pedestrain scaled residential streets. The Plan calls for narrowing the streets and developing linear parks along several of the North/South streets to provide a more pedestrian streetscape. Opportunities to reduce stormwater runoff by providing permeable planting and paving were utilized in the streetscape design.
An array of treatments were designed for each roadway and refined with consultation with MUNI, City transportation staff and a Citizens Advisory Committee. Opportunities to improve pedestrian and bike connections as well as to accommodate existing and future bus transit and carpooling were incorporated within the street design. The Open Space includes a large new park referred to as Transbay Square. Successful urban parks in San Francisco were studied to refine the open space design and suggested improvements for residents and visitors.
